Nobody Announces One
●○○○○hunch
This is further out than most of what's on this site: a post-launch idea, not something scheduled to be built. The instinct is that intellectual schools of thought shouldn't be labelled anywhere in the game. They should be something a player works out from the pattern of who keeps agreeing with whom, the way it actually happens in real disciplines.
Inferred, not declared
Nobody would be told "this is the structuralist school." A player would notice it themselves, gradually, from citation patterns, which reviewers keep landing favourably on which kinds of arguments, which conference invitations cluster together. Aligning yourself with a school you've noticed would buy sympathetic reviewers and easier venue access, at the direct cost of your own originality: you're now working inside somebody else's frame rather than building your own.
Challenging a school you've identified wouldn't just mean disagreeing with one person's argument. It would mean facing something closer to coordinated resistance, because you're now arguing against a whole cluster of people whose own work leans on the position you're attacking.
A subtler kind of following someone else's lead
What makes this more interesting than just "copying an individual expert", which the game already actively punishes, is that following a school would feel like participating in a community rather than deferring to an authority. That makes it much harder to notice you're doing it, and possibly harder to design a mechanical penalty for that doesn't just feel like being punished for having colleagues.
And the idea cuts both ways: a player's own sustained, distinctive body of work might accidentally found a school, without ever setting out to. We like that symmetry. We haven't worked out what it would actually take, mechanically, for that to happen on purpose or by accident.
